Next SSCC president could be named this week

The next president of Southern State Community College could be named this week, according to Jim Ward, chairman of the college’s board of trustees.
“If we can come to an agreement, we will hopefully make the announcement Friday,” Ward said at the close of an all-day event Monday which included meet-the-candidate receptions, follow-up interviews with the board of trustees, and tours of Central Campus in Hillsboro and South Campus in Fincastle.
After reviewing feedback from Southern State faculty and staff, the trustees will meet in special session 10 a.m. Friday, Dec. 4, on Central Campus, for consideration of a public employee.
“All four finalists have outstanding strengths,” said Ward. “It’s going to be a tough decision on our part. We’re looking forward to reading the input from faculty and staff members who had an opportunity to interview the finalists today. No decision will be made until we’ve read through those comments.”
Narrowed from an initial pool of 63 candidates, 10 individuals were selected for interviews with the trustees in mid-October. Following the first interview sessions, the board of trustees selected four finalists: Dr. Kevin S. Boys, Superintendent of the Loveland City School District in Loveland, Ohio; Dr. Jerry C. Collins, Director of Undergraduate Studies at the University of South Florida in Tampa, Fla.; Dr. Lisa C. McWherter, Vice President for Institutional Advancement at Tri County Technical College in Pendleton, S.C.; and Dr. Charles T. Terrell, Vice President of Workforce Development Services and Lifelong Learning at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke, Va.
“In all honesty, the event today was excellent,” said Ward. “The four brought a lot more to the table at these interviews; the questions were more in depth. The selection will be tough.”
Current president Dr. Sherry A. Stout has announced her plan to retire effective Dec. 31, 2009. Dr. Stout has served Southern State since its founding in 1975, most recently as the college’s fourth president.[[In-content Ad]]
