Volunteer “elves” are working overtime, as the Hillsboro chapter of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots Program has spent the past few weeks preparing for the holiday season.
Throughout the months of October, November, and December, the United States Marine Corps Reserve Units and Toys for Tots local community organizations throughout the country have been collecting new, unwrapped toys for underprivileged children.
This popular program has provided more than 400 million toys since its official inception in 1948, according to the Toys for Tots Foundation brochure.
James Anthony “Tony” Keltz, owner of Grandpa Keltz’s Country Corner at Rocky Fork Lake, has spearheaded the drive for toys in the Highland County area as the local community organization leader. He and his family have spent the past few months keeping track of the 73 donation sites for toys and monetary donations and the many applications they have received from deserving children and their families.
Hillsboro Postmaster Curtis Pegram and the Hillsboro Post Office have given the local Toys for Tots organization a room in the Post Office building to work on toy orders. On Nov. 28, volunteers spent several hours organizing donated toys and were treated to a visit from Santa Claus as they worked. On Dec. 12, from 3-6 p.m., and Dec. 13, from 6-9 p.m., volunteers will be filling toy orders. To volunteer, please contact Keltz at (937) 393-8906 or show up at Suite 201 of the Hillsboro Post Office during volunteer hours.
According to Keltz, approximately 700 children from 400 local families have applied for toys this holiday season, a significant increase from previous years.
“We’re in need of a lot of toys due to the economy being so bad,” said Keltz. “We appreciate the donations.”
Toys are available for local children who are newborns to 17 years of age. The deadline for toy applications was Dec. 4, but Keltz said that more applications are available at the Hillsboro Post Office, as he does not want to see any local children go without presents this Christmas.
Toys will be distributed Saturday, Dec. 19 from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m.
A complete list of the local community organization’s drop-off locations for toys in the area, which includes The Highland County Press office, can be found at hillsboro-oh.toysfortots.org. Cans for spare change and other monetary donations are available at donation sites. Further information on credit card or check donations to Toys for Tots can be found at toysfortots.org.[[In-content Ad]]
