Larry Anderson joins SSCC Board of Trustees

Adams County resident Larry Anderson was sworn in Sept. 14 as a member of the Southern State Community College Board of Trustees.
Anderson was appointed to the board in August by Ohio Gov. John Kasich. He was sworn in during the board’s regular meeting at the SSCC central campus in Hillsboro by Adams County Court Judge Alan Foster. The board now has eight members, and one spot that remains open.
With students scheduled to begin fall quarter next week, Vice President of Business and Finance Jim Buck reported that student enrollment is down 8.3 percent.
“We anticipate a correction. We’re not concerned about this at this time, particularly with the good year we had last year,” Buck told the board members.
Board member Rory Ryan asked Buck if the enrollment drop would impact, “the adventures in property acquisition that we’ve been talking about?”
“It should not affect that whatsoever,” Buck said. “I wanted to prepare the board for enrollment decline. I believe I said (in the written report to the board) enrollment was approaching double digits. I think we’ve been hovering in and around that area. We really won’t know for about 30 days. In 30 days, I can make a projection for the year, I believe, within a percent to a percent and a half of our total students.”
The board voted 6-0 to accept Buck’s report, along with the report of SSCC President Dr. Kevin Boys.
Board members Kay Ayres and Paul Hall were not in attendance.
At 6:55 p.m. the board voted, 5-1, – with Ryan dissenting – to go into executive session to discuss the purchase of property, and entered back into regular session at approximately 9:25 p.m. for adjournment. Ryan said he would have preferred the full board be present for the closed session. No action was taken following the executive session.
In May, the board of trustees voted to authorize a search and acquisition of property for possible expansion, after hearing a report regarding a collegewide facility assessment that shows SSCC’s South Campus in Fincastle would need nearly $3 million in improvements just to “bring it up to 2011/2012 standards.”
In other business:
• The board heard an overview from Dr. Julie Krebs on SSCC’s nursing department. Krebs reported on the history of the department, areas of growth, improvements that have been made, future goals, and continuous improvement plans.
Because students from the nursing program will likely work in the area, Krebs said, “We’re training them to take care of our family and friends. We want them not just to work in this community, but to make things better in this community.”
It was reported that in 2011 40 students out of 48 have passed required testing. Board member Michelle Cimis asked how many of those 40 passing students were able to obtain jobs, and what their salaries were. Krebs said that the department is currently changing the process on how they assess employment and salaries. She said that in 2010 graduates received an average wage of $22-23 per hour, and that 50-60 percent of students found employment.
• The board voted 6-0 to approve a transfer of sick leave days for an SSCC employee.
• Board vice president Vicki Wilson reported on the Ohio Board of Regents University System of Ohio Trustees conference that she attended in August with Boys and Ayres. Wilson said that there was discussion on the difference between “governing and managing” and how boards of trustees needed to be governors.
“Managing,” she said needed to be left to the president and that the board should “support the president, set goals, and hold the president accountable for achieving those goals. They cautioned against over-engagement, and not to be too focused on detail, but on the vision,” and that board should “recognize their main responsibility is to the students.”

The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees Nominating Committee held a brief meeting Wednesday, Sept. 14, following the trustees’ meeting.
Nominating committee chairman Rory Ryan and committee member Dr. Vicki Wilson were present. Committee member Paul Hall did not attend the meeting.
A motion was made by Ryan with a second by Wilson to propose the following recommendations to the full Board of Trustees at the October meeting:
• For 2012 board chair – Dr. Vicki Wilson;
