HHS 2011 graduate recognized as top achiever

Hillsboro High School graduate Shelby Gibson, daughter of Carol and Ben Gibson, has been recognized as the top achiever in the Business Cooperative Program for Hillsboro High School.
She worked more than 1,000 hours and earned more than $6,500 (net) while an employee for Holtfield Coffee Station. After six months of employment, Shelby was promoted to trainer.
Christina Warnock, manager for Holtfield, said “Shelby makes good choices. She is dependable and gives 110 percent effort to every job and she is flexible. If a schedule needs filled, Shelby will always cover even on the spur of a moment.”
Shelby was asked what life lessons she has learned from this experience and without hesitation she said, “Responsibility, because others are counting on you.”
A few of the customers chimed in and described Shelby as “sweet, polite, kind, and awesome.”
Christina said, “Shelby has a good rapport with the customers.” One customer said, “You have great coffee, but we come for the compassionate environment.”
Shelby is very caring toward others and will spend the biggest part of her summer helping others. She will travel to Panama next week for a mission trip that will last until the end of June and during the third week of July, she will travel to Tennessee to work in an orphanage.
She will be attending the Nashville Freewill Baptist Bible College, majoring in education with a minor in missions.
“Shelby will be hard to replace, but more importantly, she will be missed!” Christina said.
The Business Cooperative Program provides an opportunity for HHS students to leave campus early to participate in a Business Experience. The businesses involved during the 2010-11 school year were: Holtfield, NCB, KFC, Stratton Electric, Hillsboro Recreation, Stephanie's Restaurant, TSC, Bud’s Auto Sales, Hunter’s Edge, Tux & Tan, Redline Cycles, Lowes and Kroger.
Without their support, this program would not be successful. Another business to be recognized is Hobart for providing an opportunity to speak with Brian Kadel, General Manager and Ron Hennison, Productions Manager, followed by a tour of the plant.
During the year, students completed 67 employment applications, worked over 5,500 hours and earned over $39,000.
