Frankfort man sentenced in Highland County weapon case

A Frankfort man was sentenced to 30 days in jail, plus three years of community control, this week after pleading guilty to a weapons under disability charge in Highland County.

Jan Michael Chaney, 43, was indicted by a Highland County grand jury in March on one count each of having weapons while under disability, a third-degree felony, and aggravated possession of methamphetamine, a fifth-degree felony, along with a forfeiture specification. 

He pleaded guilty to the weapons charge and forfeiture specification in May, according to court records.

It is alleged that on or about Feb. 3, Chaney “did knowingly acquire, have, carry or use a firearm” while “not having been relieved from disability” due to a previous domestic violence case. The weapon Chaney was alleged to have “had in his possession,” a .38 Special, is subject to forfeiture.

During a sentencing hearing June 10, Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss ordered Chaney to remain in the Highland County Jail for 30 days, after which Chaney is to successfully complete the STAR Program and recommended aftercare. Chaney was additionally sentenced to three years of community control. The weapon was ordered forfeited to the Highland County Sheriff’s Office.
