      WILMINGTON, OHIO - CMH Regional Health System’s Fourth Annual Nursing Excellence Awards banquet was held Monday, Oct. 19 at the Foster J. Boyd, MD, Regional Cancer Center community room to honor the 2008-2009 CMH Clinical Ladder participants.
      The CMH Clinical Ladder program is an evaluation and advancement system that offers registered nurses opportunities for clinical advancement, development of leadership capabilities, continuing education and a financial reward for demonstrated ability. The program is built upon successful completion of the previous level. This year CMH honored 25 CMH registered nurses and one licensed practical nurse, representing 13 departments.
      The 18 Clinical Ladder Level 1 nurses honored were Jani Anderson, Cindy Bevan, Susie Brooks, Terra Burton, Janet Creamer, Emily Stephens, Ashley Dingman, Jan Estle, Linda Falgner, Nina Humphreys, Amber Keller, Christine Lawrence, Donna Lewis, Cindy Macke, Marcia Michael, Erin Sholler, Donna Webster and Kim Zeckser.
      The eight Clinical Ladder Level 2 nurses honored were Cynthia Chester, Linda Earls, Jamie Evanshine, Peggy Hart, Dawn Perez, Debbie Persinger, Mary Shanaberger and Janet Walt.
      To verify that the nurse has the potential to be successful in the program, certain requirements must be met, including length of clinical experience and evidence of high job performance. The objectives of the program are:
to acknowledge advancing clinical expertise and simultaneously increase responsibility for quality direct patient care;
to appropriately utilize and reward the education, experience and performance of each registered nurse;
to foster increasing responsibility and independence in the registered nurse's growth and practice;
to create clinical advanced practice and management opportunities for the career-minded professional;
to apply each level to all areas of clinical nursing;
to improve staff recruiting, development, retention and job satisfaction as well as maintain market competitive compensation; and
to promote and uphold CMH’s mission, vision and values.
      Judi Henson, RN, and CMH chief nursing officer, welcomed those in attendance before dinner. Dr. Mike Choo, CMH chief medical officer and vice president operations also spoke a few words about the critical role nurses play and the importance of nurse/physician collaboration.
      After dinner and dessert, guest speaker, Bonnie Lee, RN, retired CMH nurse, spoke to the nursing group. Lee spoke about the changes she has seen in the nursing field during her 30 years and the new challenges the nursing field will face in the future. She also gave her thoughts on how to be a successful care giver and how nurses should focus on caring for their own mind, body and spirit.
      Awards were given to all clinical ladder nurses in attendance by Judi Henson.
