Agencies remind drivers to stay safe this holiday

Ohio Department of Transportation, Press Release

The Thanksgiving holiday is one of the busiest travel times of the year. With travel numbers predicted to break records, a lot of people will be on the roads and in the air during the next few days. The Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) partnered with the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSP) and Dayton International Airport (DAY) for a press event Monday to share travel information with motorists.

“We are thrilled that so many passengers choose Dayton International Airport to be the start of their holiday celebrations,” said Daniel Zenk, Deputy Director of the Dayton International Airport. “With many one-stop destinations, passengers have access to endless travel options. There’s a lot of excitement about the Dayton Airport’s continued growth, and we intend to continue providing an ‘Easy to and through’ experience for all our travelers during this holiday season.”

Airport travelers are encouraged to check in ahead of time, make sure they have packed appropriately and have all the necessary identification ready to go.

Along with heavy traffic at the airports, Ohio roadways will be inundated with travelers heading to their holiday destinations. Motorists are reminded to allow extra travel time, stay alert and put away distractions behind the wheel. ODOT is also doing its part to alleviate congestion.

"We will be reducing the size of work zones across the state and limiting work in those areas to help with increased traffic volumes," said ODOT Regional Public Information Officer Mandi Dillon.

There will still be some orange barrels throughout the state including along I-75 in Dayton and Cincinnati and I-70/71 in Columbus. Other areas with work zones include I-70 in Zanesville, and I-76 and I-77 in Akron. Motorists are urged to check OHGO.com for the latest travel times and updates before they leave.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol wants to make sure drivers are doing their part to share the responsibility of staying safe on the roads. Planning ahead, obeying the speed limit, putting down distractions and staying alert are imperative when you are behind the wheel. Motorists are also reminded to plan ahead and get a designated driver or ride share if they plan on drinking this holiday season.

"We want everyone to enjoy a safe Thanksgiving. As we gather with friends and family, we must do so responsibly and safely," said Ohio State Highway Patrol Sergeant Tyler Ross. "Roadway safety is a shared responsibility, and motorists are encouraged to safely call #677 to report reckless or impaired driving on Ohio Roadways."

Travelers are encouraged to do their homework and plan ahead so that they are prepared for anything that comes up along the way. The goal is for everyone to make it to and from their holiday destinations safely.
