Bill (Walter William) Fawley, 79, of Lynchburg, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 29, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

He was born on Aug. 20, 1946, in Ironton, the son of the late Edgar H. Fawley and Marjorie E. (Doty) Fawley.

Bill was a proud 1964 graduate of Lynchburg High School. He continued his education at Union College in Barbourville, Ky., earning his bachelor’s degree in education in 1969.

After college, Bill returned to his hometown and began his career as a teacher at Lynchburg-Clay High School, where he taught social studies and mathematics. His commitment to public service continued throughout his life. Bill went on to work for three different congressmen in both Ohio and Washington, D.C., experiences he valued deeply.

Bill attended the Hillsboro Global Methodist Church. His faith was always a big part of his life. In the past, he had served on various committees and as a youth group leader.

Bill dedicated 32 years of service to Highland County as the Highland County Auditor, a role he approached with integrity, fairness and genuine care for the people he served. During his many years in the Auditor’s Office, he made countless friends and earned the respect of colleagues and residents alike. A lifelong public servant, Bill was also active in the Highland County Republican Party, where he remained engaged and committed to the community he loved.

Despite an accomplished career, Bill’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He was a devoted and loving husband, a caring father, and a proud grandfather whose face lit up whenever his grandsons were nearby.

Bill treasured family trips to Tennessee, sitting in the front row cheering on his grandsons at their sporting events, and simply spending time with his beloved wife, Dianne. His love for his family was the foundation of his life.

Bill will be remembered for his kindness, wisdom, dedication to service, and unwavering love for his family. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Bill is survived by his wife, Dianne (Wilson) Fawley, whom he married on Dec. 23, 1978; a son, Will and daughter-in-law, Kara (Chalfin) Fawley; his grandsons, Dax and Tripp Fawley; sister-in-law, Jean E. Fawley; nieces, Kristen (Mike) Long Greenawalt, Kim Long Norman, Kelly (Clint) Long Hall, and many great nieces and nephews, and great-great nieces and nephews.
