To the editor:

Dear Highland County business owners and residents,

PFC Zachary Gullett (Zach), 20, was born in Dayton, Ohio on July 3, 1986.

Zach was a 2004 graduate of Hillsboro High School, where he participated in marching band, drama, symphonic choir, and football.

He was also a member of the Military Police Regimental Association.

In 2005, Zach attended Ohio University-Chillicothe and graduated with a certificate of completion in law enforcement. Zach then enlisted in the Army on Feb. 23, 2006 and reported to Fort Leonard Wood, Mo., for One Station Unit Training (OSUT) as a military policeman.

He graduated from OSUT on Aug. 8, 2006. Upon completion of his training, he reported to the 984th MP Company in Fort Carson, Colo., on Aug. 18, 2006.

Zach was deployed to Iraq on Sept. 16, 2006 and was stationed in Ad Diwaniyah, Iraq. He was very proud to be a military police officer and was planning to pursue a career with the Ohio State Highway Patrol at the conclusion of his five years of enlistment with the U.S. Army.

Zach had returned to his squad in Iraq at midnight on May 1 after having spent 15 days at home in Hillsboro, enjoying time with his family and friends. Zach died on Tuesday morning, May 1, 2007, after collapsing while doing his PT exercises with his squad.

Upon Zach’s death, a scholarship trust was established at Merchants National Bank in Hillsboro.

The PFC Zachary R. Gullett Memorial Scholarship is given annually to a senior graduating from Hillsboro High School pursuing a career in law enforcement or criminal justice. The first annual scholarship was given in 2007.

At this time, we are asking for items to be donated for an auction. We plan to make themed baskets with the donated items and then hold a silent auction to benefit the scholarship trust the evening of the benefit dinner, which will be from 4-8 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at the Hillsboro VFW Post 9094.

Any donations from you or your business would be greatly appreciated. For more information, call (937) 393-5563.

Sincerely,
Connie Gullett
Trustee
