  • Commissioners OK plan to convert conference room into storage space

    Following an executive session, commissioners Gary Heaton, Tom Horst and Shane Wilkin met with a number of county department administrators regarding items stored in the West Main Street building that is under consideration for sale to Fite.
  • Council addresses options on former Hillsboro city building
    With Hillsboro Fire and Rescue now fully moved into their new station, the city is left to decide what will happen to the old fire station on North High Street. The finance committee and property maintenance and restoration committee of the Hillsboro City Council discussed the possibility of leasing the building despite its current condition of disrepair. The committee reviewed the appraisal of the building, conducted by Southern Ohio Appraisers, which placed the value of the structure at $110,000.

    With an unemployment rate that exceeds 19 percent, the people of Highland County are facing trying times. Area individuals and families are coping with massive job loss, area government is functioning on diminished dollars, and everyone is trying to do more with less. According to Highland County Sheriff Ron Ward, his office is no exception. A review of the department's 2009 year to date statistics shows the crime that most often resulted in criminal arrest was domestic violence, with 118 incidents. The second highest was theft, with 57 incidents, followed by assault at 50 incidents.
  • Hillsboro schools cut spending deficit
    Although it will be by a smaller margin than anticipated, it is projected the Hillsboro City Schools will end the year with a spending deficit of approximately $250,000.

    The Greenfield Police Department is actively investigating the stabbing of a 24-year-old male that allegedly occurred late March 17.
  • Planning commission tables camping issue
    The Hillsboro Planning Commission has tabled an ongoing matter regarding camping at the Highland County Fairgrounds.
  • Hillsboro Police Report for March 15-16
    On March 15 at 10:59 p.m., the Hillsboro Police Department responded to an alarm call on McDowell Street. Upon officer's arrival, it was found that someone had cut a hole in the fence belonging to AEP. Someone also tried to gain entry into the building. This report remains under investigation. $200 worth of property was damaged.
  • County, business remain at impasse on tax issue
    Highland County commissioners and the legal counsel for Hangar 6 remained at an impasse Wednesday over property taxes levied against the business. Hangar 6 attorney Brian Sullivan of the Cincinnati firm of Dinsmore and Shohl, LLP, told commissioners he was "disappointed" over a March 15 letter, in which commissioners closed by saying "We cannot ask the taxpayers of Highland County to pay the taxes for {Hangar 6 owner George Matthews}, nor was that agreed to in the lease."
