  • Village of Highland grateful for support

    After a little over a year of being in service, the Village of Highland would like to thank the following businesses and individuals for their donations of equipment, materials, services, money, or time that went toward providing the village law enforcement with equipment. The Village of Highland had been without its own law enforcement for approximately nine years until 2009.
  • ODOT report: New numbers show more Ohioans riding passenger rail
    Based on new passenger rail ridership figures from Amtrak, a review by the Ohio Department of Transportation and the Ohio Rail Development Commission shows that the demand for transportation choice is on the rise, with 14 percent more Ohioans riding passenger trains over the past year, according to a news release from ODOT's Scott Varner today.

  • Ohio unemployment rate at 10 percent
    Ohio's unemployment rate was 10.0 percent in September, down from 10.1 percent in August, according to data released Oct. 22 by the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services (ODJFS). Ohio's nonfarm wage and salary employment decreased 17,300 over the month, from the revised 5,031,500 in August to 5,014,200 in September.

  • Former corrections officer indicted
    On Tuesday, Oct. 19, the Highland County Grand Jury issued an indictment against Christopher L. Hilderbrandt, 30, of Highland County. The indictment was for one count of sexual battery, a felony of the third degree.

    The Hillsboro Post Office is providing free postage on any flat-rate parcel mailed to any military personnel currently serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, effective Nov. 1-30, 2010, for Highland County residents.

    The City of Hillsboro Water Department will be conducting its annual hydrant flushing starting Monday, Oct. 25 through Friday, Oct. 29, 2010.
  • State: "Ohioans to speak out on creating more Ohio jobs through transportation"
    ODOT will hold the first in a series of interactive public workshops across the state to give residents a chance to speak out about policy issues that impact transportation investment in Ohio, according to a news release from the Department of Transportation. The workshops are part of the department’s first-of-its-kind ‘GO Ohio’ Transportation Futures Plan that will look at state investments in all modes
    of travel and shipping - highway, air, rail, transit, water, pedestrian and bicycle – and align those transportation choices more comprehensively with job creation, economic development and quality of life.

  • Federal judge allows states' challenge of health-care reform law to move forward
    While dismissing most of the states' other complaints, Vinson ruled that states can contest whether the law's "individual mandate" requiring virtually all Americans to buy health insurance exceeds Congress' constitutional authority to regulate commerce and make laws "necessary and proper" for carrying out its powers.
