| A friend in Proverbs |
Be honest with yourself. How did you do? Are you more of an acquaintance or a friend? Make the adjustments, change your attitude, and if you do, both your friends and your acquaintances will thank you by adding you to their hand.

| Mowrystown Recollections: Rev. Brouillette |
Things happen that keep me focused on the stories at hand. I would like to give the French families a break for a while, knowing that there are more families to cover; but Phil Beltz of Upper Arlington just completed a working vacation in France, Germany and Switzerland, visiting old Beltz mills in Germany and doing research on French families that settled in Mowrystown. | Paint Creek fire district 'gets it' |
Folks, as I get out and about every so often I run into something that needs to be shared. Last week I attended the formal opening of the new Paint Creek Joint EMS/Fire District. I say formal because it has actually been operating since Jan. 1 of this year. In my leadership classes, I try to instill in my students the idea that it is the leader’s job to make sure the goals are achieved. In other words, it is the leader’s job to “Make it happen.”

| Numbers don't support 'recovery' |
Summer won’t be over until Sept. 23. Labor Day is next week, and kids are back in school. High school football is in full swing, and the Buckeyes have their first game under their belt. But we still have a solid three weeks of summer left on the calendar. But it doesn’t matter when one thinks summer ends. It’s pretty clear that “Recovery Summer,” brought to you by an endless diatribe by Barack Obama and Joe Biden, is going to end up as a “Recovery Bummer.” (2 comments) Thursday, September 02, 2010

| Like Holtz, Spicer expects strong second half |
I can’t say if Coach Spicer is a Lou Holtz fan and, frankly, I’m almost afraid to ask. If he’s not, the rest of this column might be rather pointless. Coach Holtz, of course, grew up in another eastern Ohio town (East Liverpool) on the banks of the Ohio River. Thursday, September 02, 2010

| Man creates life; then what? |
If creation of life has ever been a choice, it has been that of the Almighty; at least that is what many of us believe. Despite the perfection of mathematics, and the wonders and dimensions of physics, there seems to be a sense that biology is different. It is more than the result of atoms in reaction with one another and somehow contains a divine spark, or the essence of life. No matter, because mortals have now made artificial life. | E-books will not replace traditional novels
|
The truth is that after 30 years of Internet reading, the novel will still exist. It won’t crash, it doesn’t need batteries, and will survive being dropped countless times. Can you say the same for e-books? (2 comments) Sunday, August 29, 2010

| Put politics aside and fix the problems |
Folks, I am becoming very tired of politicians throwing verbal stones of blame at each other. Comments like: “Bush was the first president to leave office with fewer people working than when he entered office;” or “Obama hasn’t done anything to bring our jobs back." It is all about blame. | Let New York decide mosque issue |
It should be kept that way, and politicians from Alaska to the White House should let the thing be resolved without further debate. (5 comments) Friday, August 27, 2010

| Thank you for a memorable first year |
As we continue to follow in Mr. William Latham's footsteps by publishing a real, local community newspaper, we can't thank you enough for letting us be a small part of your week. We do appreciate it. Thanks. Friday, August 27, 2010

| Lame duck session cap and trade legislation would compound economic struggles |
Over the past month, news reports have suggested that the majority in Congress are considering a lame duck session, following the November elections, to push controversial and far-reaching legislation. Tuesday, August 24, 2010

| We need more Good Samaritans |
To Mr. Meade and Mr. Strickland, I wish there were more people out there like you, like my neighbors, Dawn and Mick Smith, who would do anything for you, too. Again, thank you, God bless you, and I hope others learn from your example and not wait until it's too late to tell you how much we do appreciate you. Monday, August 23, 2010

| Public safety or revenue enhancement? |
While business owners have verbal assurances that these inspections “are not about citations and fines,” previous city actions, such as the attempt to impose fees for the inspections, suggest otherwise. (25 comments) Friday, August 20, 2010

| On one hand |
Some of you had the privilege of knowing my grandfather Mr. Clifford Ballentine. I have been thinking about him quite a bit lately because this was the week of his death several years ago.

| Workplace safety no longer a concern? |
Folks, we are expendable. There is no better way to word this. During 2008, the most recent year that numbers are available, 5,214 American workers were killed on the job. Another four and a half million were seriously injured, and this number is far below the real number because of the way injuries are reported. (3 comments) Thursday, August 19, 2010
