A South Salem man facing three second-degree felony charges of attempted assault of a police officer with a firearm has been bound over to Highland County Common Pleas Court for presentation to a grand jury.

Thousands flock to fair for free admission Wednesday WATCH THE VIDEO
Thousands of area residents flocked to the Highland County Fair Wednesday for free admittance.
 Fair board president Dave Stratton said that due to the economic hardships, the board felt that everyone deserved to have some fun.
 Attendance is up from last year, he said, which saw more than 60,000 people through general admission.
 Livestock sales began Wednesday night, with the sales of market barrow and goats.

SSCC board approves 14 percent faculty contract increase; insurance concessions bring actual increase to 11 percent
The Southern State Community College Board of Trustees voted 8-0 to approve a three-year contract between the college and the faculty's Southern State Education Association. With step increases, the contract is an increase of just over 14 percent. However, due to an "unprecedented concession" made by the faculty regarding insurance benefits, the increase is actually around 11 percent.

City ordered to pay nearly $10,000 in attorney fees for Parker Hotel owner
Highland County Common Pleas Court Judge Rocky Coss has ruled that the city of Hillsboro must pay nearly $10,000 in attorney fees for Jack Hope regarding the litigation between the city and Hope, owner of the Parker Hotel.

Smith sentenced to three years for unlawful sexual contact with minor
A Dodson Township man who pleaded guilty in July to unlawful sexual contact with a minor has been sentenced to three years in prison.
 Nicholas A. Smith, 31, was indicted May 4 by a grand jury in Highland County Common Pleas Court on one count of sexual battery, a felony of the third degree. On July 23 he pleaded guilty to a bill of particulars on the sexual contact charge, a felony of the third degree.

Court grants defense motion to exclude regarding accelerant testimony in Coonrod case WATCH THE VIDEO

Judge Rocky Coss has ruled in favor of the defense regarding a pretrial motion in limine to exclude evidence from a canine search in proceedings in the capital murder case of Wesley Coonrod. 

An evidentiary hearing was held on the motion, and several other matters, Tuesday in Highland County Common Pleas Court.

Labor Day crowd packs fair WATCH THE VIDEO

A Labor Day crowd packed the midways and filled the booths Monday at the Highland County Fair. 

Leesburg resident Blake Adams, whose family raises cattle on their farm, was busy washing her cow in preparation for showing. Blake told The Highland County Press that she has a better calf than she did last year and she hopes to win the showman competition. 

While Blake was focused on her 4-H activities, other area residents were busy occupying the rides, playing games and strolling through the exhibition buildings.

2010 Highland County Fair kicks off WATCH THE VIDEO

After a few days of preliminary setup and unpacking, the first day of the 2010 Highland County Fair kicked off Saturday, with the crowning of the Junior Fair Queen. 

Tiffany Satterfield, of Hillsboro, was named the 2010 Junior Fair Queen, with runners up Lisa Rhonemus, Daisy Christophel and Kellly Mustard.

Four compete to be crowned junior fair queen

Four young ladies from across Highland County will compete Saturday to become the 2010 Highland County Junior Fair Queen. 

Daisy Christophel , of Lynchburg, Kelly Mustard, of Hillsboro; Lisa Rhonemus, of Lynchburg; and Tiffany Satterfield, of Hillsboro, will each compete for the crown.
