In February of 1954, Highland County citizens (at least SOME of them) were up in arms because Postmaster General Summerfield had proposed an increase in the cost of mailing a letter. A letter had cost three cents to mail for almost 20 years. Now, all of a sudden, Summerfield had proposed increasing it to four cents. Can you imagine that? There was a near insurrection – at least in Highland County.
