Does Medicare want your doctor to quit?

By October 2014, we are expected to be using the new updated ICD-10 code book of diagnoses, adding new digits, numbers, and minutia to our recording of what ailments or injuries befall our patients. Our current EMRs will need to be completely revamped if we want them to accommodate these new codes, and the cost to do this might be impossible for a solo practitioner to afford.

Government is the problem

To be governed is to be watched, inspected, spied upon, directed, law-driven, numbered, regulated, enrolled, indoctrinated, preached at, controlled, checked, estimated, valued, censured, commanded, by creatures who have neither the right nor the wisdom nor the virtue to do so.

A staggering abuse of power

If Benghazi represents abuse or misuse of power, the IRS stands in direct violation of the First Amendment – targeting American citizens for their political beliefs. The more we learn about this controversy, the clearer it becomes that anyone who dared to talk about spending, debt or anything related to our current state of government affairs from a conservative perspective was a target.

Eight months after our own ambassador was murdered and we were told the cause was a YouTube video, we still can’t get a straight answer out of the Obama Administration.

The little turtle

Greg opened his hand over mine. Something cold and slightly scratchy fell into my palm, and I pulled my hand back in surprise. This was not what I had expected. I looked down and saw the littlest turtle I had ever seen. It was not even as big as a quarter and was so perfectly formed.

Other-acts evidence

When Van Williams met a young man – we’ll refer to him as J.H. – at the Good Shepherd Baptist Church in East Cleveland, it seemed like a nice story. J.H. had no contact with his natural father and lived with his grandmother, so Williams became a mentor to him, and would often buy him gifts and pay him to do odd jobs at his home.

Have fun, but be careful. Did you ever have one of those days that made you pause and think: That's pretty good unsolicited advice? Me, neither. That is, until this weekend.

Pop bottles, dead birds, green stickers and paper towels

Ladies and gentlemen, I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but a major soft drink giant is allegedly killing all the birds. At least that’s what Greenpeace seems to be accusing a soda company of doing in a new ad. The 45-second ad shows some youngsters drinking some pop, then dead birds start falling from the sky.

Americans deserve the truth about scandals

The IRS was not the only government department overstepping its authority. News reports indicate that Kathleen Sebelius, the head of Health and Human Services, solicited donations from companies that HHS oversees to fund enrollment efforts related to the health care insurance exchanges established by ObamaCare. At best, this appears to be an inherent conflict of interest. At worst, it is a potentially illegal augmentation of the appropriations process established by the Constitution.

I am sure glad the president never makes these decisions and that he hears about them in the newspapers about the same time we do. It does worry me, though, that all these low-level employees have such a free hand. Oh, Harry, can you please return and bring adult supervision to Washington, D.C.?

Alva Martin’s “History of Clay Township of Highland County Ohio” says that Jacob Fender built his brick house in 1852. In this same book, Alva writes the following about Israel Rice: “Israel Rice moved to Clay Township in 1838 and settled near Buford.

A longstanding American ethos was breached during the terrorist attack in Benghazi. As a nation, we have always held the notion that no American will be left behind and that we will respond when Americans are threatened.

We think it’s time Congress stopped serving as a middle man and streamlined this system. The current process requires businesses to arrange meetings with members of Congress and their staffs and this, in turn, often requires the help of lobbyists — a luxury that many small businesses can’t afford.

Wayne Allyn Root, the executive vice chairman of the Conservative Caucus, has released details of two separate alleged attacks on him by the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), the first dating back to 2011, and the second coming within five days after he had been exonerated in the first.

The guilty charge of Dr. Kermit Gosnell, dethroned ruler of 'Gosnell's House of Horrors' may spark justice for more women and babies across America. Justice is served with this verdict, but injustice will continue unless we end abortion in this country.

Get involved

There is a new effort afoot to try to deal with all the issues of foster care. It is a faith-based initiative, so far active only in Oklahoma and Georgia. It is called the 111 Project (you can easily find it on the web). Why 111? The idea is to have one family in each church take in one foster child – one church, one family, one child.

Respecting the sacrifices of our veterans

As the flag goes back up on Memorial Day, the torch is passed from those who gave their lives to those who continue the fight. Our treatment of the men and women who serve reflects our values as a nation, which is why it is time to hold the VA accountable for their shortcomings. I assure you that I go to work every day with this mission in mind.

Reimbursement of fees

The question before us was this: Does the trial court abuse its discretion by taxing an opposing party attorney’s fees that are strictly related to the claims for which the trier of fact determined that the employee was ineligible to participate in the workers’ compensation fund?
