Respect the office

Frankly, there's not much from all of my past experiences that I can draw from to rationalize this type of behavior from a public official. He seemed to be angry at this newspaper and, at the same time, angry at one of his primary campaign opponents who was attending the public meeting. (For the record, I have never written about the mayor's hair or sleeping habits. I don't care about either. Nor does anyone else. Get over yourself.)

Post-forum questions

I must say that I was impressed by all of the candidates at county commissioner forum hosted by the Highland County TEA Party this past Monday evening, though some shined brighter than others. But it certainly isn’t my place to critique the candidates for their public speaking; besides, one’s public speaking ability has more to do with getting elected than actually fulfilling the requirements of the office.

It has been said that if you think the problems that government creates are bad, just wait until you see its solutions.

Mowrystown Recollections: Five Oaks School

In my article on Concord School 8, I mentioned not having any student cards and I said that I would like to have one. Well, I had one all the time, and I had forgotten that Carolyn Yochum Taylor had given me one of her grandmother’s, Lea Alexander, who attended this school. Carolyn’s mother was Ona Druhot Yochum, wife of Elmer, and her mother was Lea Alexander, who had married George F. Druhot on Sept. 16, 1907. (The photo is of the card, courtesy of Carolyn Taylor.)

Breaking up is hard to do

“There’s a lot more that the president could be doing in the area of finances. He could be advancing programs that teach and educate people on how to invest for themselves instead of vilifying hard-working capitalists every day.”

Yes, it's been said many times. There are watchdogs. And then there are lapdogs. Some dogs will hunt. Some dogs are best left on the porch.

Running government like a business pays off for Ohio taxpayers

Ohio’s families, senior citizens and small businesses have sacrificed in order to make ends meet in today’s economy. I believe taxpayers have a right to expect their government to be just as committed to tightening the belt and doing more with less.

Hubris and illegitimate assumptions

Presidents must be incredibly egotistical to think they can actually run an economy for 300 million–plus people. Even with the help of a 535-member Congress, the job can’t be done. No government can run a healthy economy. To think so is just hubris on the part of politicians.

Muddy optimism

I have always been an optimist, but of late my typically bright outlook on life has been sorely tested. This winter's endless mud has begun to coat not only our creek world, but my disposition as well.

A better policy for U.S., Israel, and the Middle East

Why does America call itself a friend of Israel but continue to pressure them to turn over large portions of their land (i.e. the West Bank) to Moslem radicals who openly proclaim they will be satisfied with nothing less than Israel’s complete extermination?

Citizen's arrest

In June 2006, this law – we’ll call it the “citizen’s arrest” law – was amended by the Ohio legislature. Prior to that time, a private citizen could file an affidavit charging an offense without it being reviewed by a “reviewing official.” After the amendment, the law limited a private citizen’s ability to cause the arrest or prosecution of another.

Wrong criteria for candidates

Our society seems to have stooped to a new low. Good men who have been given much, and of which much is expected, have long ceased to be leaders. We have been left with tertiary wannabes with hidden agendas who wouldn’t have been given a second serious thought in the past.

Banking era before 'too big to fail'

The Lynchburg banker knew the property well and what it was worth. He accepted responsibility if he made a bad loan. The people making the toxic loans were probably getting commissions or bonuses based on how many loans they made, and the loans were being sold to third or fourth parties so they and the organization they worked for had nothing to lose if the loan went bad.

An early school in Concord Township was near the corner of Pondlick Road and S.R. 136. Thomas and Hannah Roberts leased, for 99 years, a one-acre and 70-pole lot to the School Directors of District 3 for the grand sum of one cent for rent, which was payable on the first day of January on demand.

Who controls America?

I’m convinced between government, politicians, money and these relationships we know nothing about, the truly average American has absolutely no power anymore except in the form of a collective mob or protest.
